Speakers: Domenico Girelli
Prof. Domenico Girelli graduated in Medicine, summa cum laude at the University of Verona in 1985. He is an Internal Medicine specialist with a Ph.D. in Experimental Hematology (University of Milan/Ministry of Education, University and Research, Rome 1993). Prof. Girelli is currently full Professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine, University of Verona, and Director of the Internal-Urgency Medicine Clinical Unit at the University Hospital of Verona, Italy.
He is also the local coordinator of the Center for Rare Hematological Diseases (ERN-EuroBloodNet) of the University Hospital of Verona, and current member of the Scientific Program Committee of the European Hematology Association, the WHO Working Group for Implementation of Patient Blood Management, and of the Scientific Committee of the European Federation of the Associations of Patients with Hemochromatosis. Prof. Girelli is also a former Member of the BOD of BIOIRON (from 2015 to 2019 serving as Treasurer) and of the Scientific Committee on Iron and Heme of the American Society of Hematology (from 2017 to 2020). Nowadays he is Associate Editor of Internal and Emergency Medicine, a member of the Editorial Board of HemaSphere, and coordinator of the BIOIRON Committee for Nomenclature of Hemochromatosis.
Prof. Girelli has longstanding experience in clinically oriented research on iron metabolism disorders. His main research achievements in the iron field were the first clinical and molecular descriptions of the Hereditary Hyperferritinemia Cataract Syndrome (1995), and the HAMP-related Hemochromatosis (2003, coordinated by Clara Camaschella). He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and a contributor to several textbooks (including UpToDate® - chapters on Hemochromatosis; invited Author for the chapter on "Iron Deficiency and Other Hypoproliferative Anemias" of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine 22nd Edition, along with Clara Camaschella). He is invited speaker at several international Meetings, including BIOIRON, the American Society of Hematology, the European Hematology Association, the European Iron Club, and Société Française d'Hématologie.
